Islamabad – Federal Minister for Planning, Development, and Special Initiatives, Ahsan Iqbal, has announced a groundbreaking PKR 67 billion initiative aimed at eradicating Hepatitis C from Pakistan within the next three to four years. Speaking at a seminar focused on Hepatitis C elimination, the minister emphasized the importance of comprehensive reforms in the health sector as a prerequisite for national progress.
Pakistan currently holds the grim distinction of having the highest number of Hepatitis C patients worldwide. In addition, diseases such as diabetes and tuberculosis are also rising at an alarming rate. Highlighting Pakistan’s capability, Ahsan Iqbal stated, “If Pakistan can develop nuclear weapons, it can also eradicate Hepatitis C.” He cited Egypt as an example, where a similar campaign successfully eliminated the disease, underscoring Pakistan’s potential to replicate this success.
The minister also stressed the importance of achieving a 90% literacy rate for sustainable development, noting that over 25 million children remain out of school. He warned of the challenges posed by Pakistan's rapidly growing population and urged the nation to make informed and strategic decisions to secure its future.
Addressing the need for political stability and continuity in policies, Ahsan Iqbal said, “The political instability set the country back, but today, Pakistan is once again on the path of progress.” He highlighted recent achievements, including the stock market crossing the 100,000-point mark, a 30% increase in exports, and improvements in global rankings.
The minister also referred to the “Uraan Pakistan” project as a vision for the nation’s development, emphasizing that all progress begins with a dream. He encouraged the country to focus on long-term goals, aiming to transform Pakistan into a stable and prosperous nation by 2047, marking 100 years of independence.
This ambitious health initiative is expected to not only save millions of lives but also serve as a significant milestone in Pakistan’s journey towards becoming a healthier and more developed nation.
